Escape Directory|Guide to the best on Lisbon's south side

This region most famous product is a fortified sweet wine in the style of Muscat and called Moscatel.

Unlike the equivalent Muscats of France, Setubal improves with age and ranges from the young bottles of 6 years old to the oldest which have 50 years old, and tasting and taking home a bottle is a must.

Did you know that near to the city of Setubal is the State Prison of Pinheiro da Cruz whose inmates together with its staff are responsible for producing both red and white wines that have gained national awards for their quality?...

There is something truly delightful in the discovery of a wine unknown in your home country, so we have put together some days for you to discover this regions wine secrets and hopefully you will find it as fun and as fascinating as we did!

DOC

Setubal is the name of a fortified wine which has its own DOC. Made predominantly from Muscat grapes. Due to EC regulations, however, the name Moscatel de Setubal can no longer be used (as the proportion of Moscatel does not reach a high enough proportion in the blend). Three different vine varieties are permitted: Moscatel de Setubal (Muscat of Alexandria), Moscatel do Douro and Moscatel Rose.
