Troia
Troia Golf opened in 1980, and is not only one of Portugal most beautiful courses it is also considered to be one of Portugal most difficult. It is situated on the pencil thin peninsular of Troia and has the unique and breathtaking views of both the Atlantic Ocean and the Sado River estuary. Its principal obstacle is sand, which borders the whole course; pine trees and wild plants are also found in abundance.
The renowned North American golf architect Robert Trent Jones Sr., designed the course and, with his usual magisterial skill and interpretation, took the tradition of links to new heights. Robert Trent Jones Sr. regards Troia Golf as one of his best courses, and the third hole, which borders the beach, one of the best Par 4 he ever created out of more than 500 courses he has designed throughout the world. Troia Golf is blessed with one of the best layouts a golfer can hope to find, offering a real challenge.
Troia hosted the Portuguese Open Championship in 1983, when victory smiled on the Scotsman Sam Torrance who averaged just two shots below Par, and was the only professional to achieve Par for the course during four days of the competition. It was elected by the magazine Golf World as the 25th best European Golf Course in 2003.
